Helena Citizens' Council

Quiet Zone Survey

Calling all aboard to take the HCC Quiet Zone Survey!

A quiet zone is a federally designated area in which trains are not legally required to sound their horns when approaching a crossing. This is made possible by the construction of additional safety features surrounding the crossing that decrease the risk associated with silencing the train horn. Although train horns are not routinely heard in a quiet zone, train engineers will still blow the train horn in certain circumstances such as in the case of an emergency.

The Council is conducting the survey to gauge citizens’ interest in developing, implementing, and funding a quiet zone in the Helena community. Over the course of the year, several citizens have approached the council with concerns regarding the level of train noise in the area.  The council wants to know whether these concerns are the sentiments of a few individuals or whether they are shared by the greater community.
