New Member on the Helena Citizens' Council

Kris Goss is the newest addition to the Helena Citizens' Council becoming the fourth neighborhood representative for District 3.  When asked why he decided to apply for a position on the council he stated, "My interest in this program is based on a belief that a citizen should attempt to understand the government that works on his or her behalf.  Responsible citizens must engage their government, ask questions, and encourage their neighbors to do the same.  When an opportunity like this program presents itself all citizens should attempt to participate."  The council is very excited that Kris has such a strong interest in city issues and looks forward to meeting him in August.

District 1 has two vacancies - call a representative to find out what it takes to join the Helena Citizens' Council. Or you can attend the next meeting and see what it's like - every fourth Wednesday of the month from 7 to 9 p.m. in room 326 of the City-County Building at 316 North Park Avenue.

Green Blocks Pilot Project

Northwestern Energy has partnered with the City of Helena on an energy conservation project called "Green Blocks" that will provide energy audits and energy conservation improvements free of charge to select residents in Helena.

154 applications were approved for the program and 114 of those homeowners were able to attend the mandatory meetings. Most of the audits and improvements will be completed during August, September and October so that program managers can assess the impact of the home improvements on gas and electricity usage this coming winter.

Wildfire Prevention and Response Meeting

In May, the Helena Citizens' Council hosted a meeting that gave homeowners in the City of Helena, Lewis & Clark County, and North Jefferson County information on wildfire potential and provided techniques for how homeowners can protect their property and structures.  Over 50 people attended the meeting to learn about the threat of fire in their community, how to create defensible space around their property, and how to develop a neighborhood emergency plan.  Learn more.

Neighborhood Fair a Success!

Did you attend the Helena Citizens' Council Neighborhood Fair this spring?  This year, there were over 40 booths representing non-profits, city and county departments, and environmentally oriented businesses.  The event was a one-stop-shop for community information.  Residents had the opportunity to learn and ask questions regarding public transportation options, county health issues, recreation opportunities, recycling, building permits, zoning, public safety etc. all in one location.  In addition, there was a presentation by Stan Bradshaw, Chair of the Climate Change Task Force, who spoke about local initiatives that can combat greenhouse gas emissions.  Learn more.
